About the artist

Peter Churcher was born in Brisbane in 1964 and completed his painting studies in Melbourne in 1992. Since that time he has exhibited regularly at Philip Bacon Galleries, and become a national and international success.  Recognised as one of the leading exponents of figurative painting in Australia, his paintings deal primarily with the human subject in portraiture and group figure narrative subjects.
Churcher's work is represented in many major public, corporate and private collections throughout Australia and overseas. Churcher is currently living and working in Barcelona. He has been an Archibald Prize finalist 10 times since 1996, and also a finalist in the Doug Moran Portrait Prize. In 2002 he was the official Australian War Artist, Persian Gulf and Afghanistan.

About the sitter

London-based internationally acclaimed classical pianist Piers Lane grew up in Brisbane. He is sought after by many of the world’s top orchestras. He's been a soloist at the BBC Proms five times, and his concerto repertoire exceeds ninety works including Busoni’s epic piano concerto, which he performed at Carnegie Hall. Lane is renowned for his recital performances, described by critics as ‘simply spellbinding’, and appears regularly at major music festivals including Bard, Prague Spring and the Chopin Festival in Warsaw, amongst others. Piers Lane was Artistic Director of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music and is the Artistic Director of the Sydney International Piano Competition. He trained as a musician at the Queensland Conservatory of Music, with renowned Queensland pianist Nancy Weir, and now tours here regularly.
