About the artwork and sitter
The artist, Will Turner and Brisbane rugby legend Alec Evans have been neighbours for 25 years. When Turner was looking for a subject to paint for the Brisbane Portrait Prize, he walked across the road, and talked to Alec.
“I did a few sketches and took some photos, and took it from there. When I showed him the finished product, he loved it.”
Aged 20, Alec Evans made his debut for Queensland playing from 1959 to 1969. On retiring from playing, Alec became a highly sought-after coach. He was head coach of Wales in 1995, assistant coach of the Wallabies in 1984 and to the premiership winning 2011 Queensland Reds.
The “Alec Evans Medal” is awarded annually to the Queensland Premier Rugby Player of the Year. Alec was inducted into the Queensland Rugby Hall of Fame in 2015 and in 2022 received Life Membership to Rugby Australia.
