About the artwork and sitter
Yumin Yang became friends with librarian Jason Carlin at the local library. She describes him as “..a very good person. I like him very much. He is very patient”. He ended up sitting for the portrait many times, and Yumin Yang did five portraits before she was happy with this one.
“Born and growing up in Brisbane, Jason has vivid and fond memories of the many avocado farms near his parent’s house in Sunnybank; of watching the new years’ fire works from his grandparents’ place in Highgate Hill; of the excitement visiting Expo88. He has happily witnessed Brisbane’s dramatic change from a “country town” to a modern city. Meanwhile, he is working with local groups to preserve the history of the old Brisbane, especially Sunnybank area.”
About the artist
Yumin Yang was a CSIRO plant scientist and now works as a full-time artist. Painting plants, landscapes, and portraits, her work combines the passion of an artist and the precision of a scientist. She lives in Kenmore, Brisbane.
