About the artwork and sitter

This work is called the Gardener. It is a self portrait, featuring cacti. “The view from (the mirror) below is a distorting one, one that exposes the throat. In many ways, that’s what self-portraits are meant to do: they force the artist to scrutinise their short-comings and expose them for all to see. The sitter has a fondness for cacti. Any metaphorical readings are not intended.”
