About the artwork and sitter
Ian Smith is a well known Brisbane artist. He taught at the Queensland College of Art in the 70’s, and has been a full time painter since.
He and Jun Chen have been good friends for more than 20 years, and this is the fourth time Chen has painted his portrait.
“This painting shows the moment that Ian was looking and thinking of his work.” Jun used heavy colour and strong marks to represent the status of the artist and showed him at work.
About the artist
Jun Chen is a Brisbane based artist, who was born in China and migrated to Australia in 1990. He achieved a Bachelor degree in China and Master degree of Visual Art from QUT. He has been selected for the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prize several times. His works are held in state and national collections.
