The Artist (Self Portrait – Growing Bigger, Taking Up Space) by Sarah Hickey

The Artist (Self Portrait - Growing Bigger, Taking Up Space)

Sarah Hickey

About the artwork

Sarah Hickey says that her self-portrait, “was made in response to a particularly brutal rejection.” Her wide stance and hands on hips is reminiscent of a Sumo Wrestler at the beginning of a competition. The head of another self-portrait is hanging upside-down in the image. It now forms part of Hickeys “garment of trinkets, badges and armour from previous battles and creative wars.” This piece is a call to take up space, to grow bigger and stronger from experience.

About the sitter
