About the artwork

The painting is a portrait of the artist’s son at 2 years old with the inspiration derived from his son’s joy of visiting a favourite café with his mother, Anna. Painted with a Calypte anna or Anna’s hummingbird in the foreground the child here is the object of devotion; innocence framed within a halo like that seen in Greek Orthodox Church iconography.

About the sitter

The subject of the portrait is the artist’s son at 2 years old although the painting was completed when he was 12.

About the artist

Justin Buchner is a self-taught artist working predominately with oil on canvas. He moved back to Brisbane in 2015 after almost 15 years living in London where he travelled extensively and gained inspiration for subject and style. Justin’s recent works have been theatrical paintings of his son.

“The world needs imagination and “Hummingbird” is an invitation to the viewer to see the world with the imagination of a child.”
